Steve Ignorant is a singer/songwriter and artist. He co-founded the anarcho-punk band Crass with Penny Rimbaud in 1977. As the lead singer, Steve performed on the frontline of music’s politics, helping extend punk’s rebellion beyond the shock of the Sex Pistols. Between 1977 and 1984, Crass forged a politics of anarcho-punk that influenced a generation. Their records – including the Falklands War protest ‘How Does it Feel (To Be The Mother Of A Thousand Dead)’ – regularly held the number one spot in the then-important Alternative Charts. Songs such as ‘Do They Owe Us A Living’ and ‘Big A Little A’ retain their seditious power today.
After Crass stopped performing in 1984, he went on to perform with other bands: Current 93 (1984-1985), Conflict (1987-1989), Schwartzeneggar (1993-1995), Stratford Mercenaries (1996-2000), and US punk band Thought Crime, as well as occasional solo performances.
On 24th and 25th November 2007 Steve & Friends performed Crass’s entire Feeding of the 5000 album with additional favourites live at the Shepherds Bush Empire.
After the Feeding gigs Steve started volunteering on the Sea Palling Independent Lifeboat in 2008 for several years and has worked as a traditional Punch and Judy performer using the name Professor Ignorant. He has written his autobiography –All The Rest Is Propaganda- and his Song/story book -References-.
In 2019 Steve started to rehearse with the ‘Steve Ignorant Band’ (Carol Hodge-vocals & keys, Jay Bagnall-drums, Peter Rawlinson-bass guitar, Pete Wilson-guitar) with the plan to start performing Crass songs in April 2020. Due to the pandemic their first performance was at the Old Cold Store in Nottingham on 24th September 2021 and was a huge success followed by the North East Calling Festival in Newcastle and the Great British Alternative Festival at Butlins Skegness.
Im Jahr 2026 ist die Steve Ignorant Band nur für eine sehr begrenzte Anzahl von Konzerten verfügbar, die auf einem anderen Konzept als bei den vorherigen Tourneen basieren.
